The growing importance of the Home Textiles sector in the Portuguese economy
The resilience of a traditional sector that has become increasingly innovative. This is the current role of the home textiles industry, which has boosted its position in the Portuguese economy and the growth in exports is just the most visible sign. It is the commitment to differentiation supported by product innovation and decades of experience and tradition that have allowed the sector to be increasingly recognized internationally.
Blankets, bed linen, table and kitchen textiles, curtains and bath linen. These are the categories that have driven the recovery and growth of the Portuguese home textiles sector. And 2021 couldn’t have ended with better news: the forecasts were positive and exceeded as home textiles exported 763 million euros, which represented a growth of 17% compared to 2019. These figures reflect more than 112 million euros in exports, compared to the previous year, in this sector alone.
The markets that love Portuguese home textiles
Portugal is currently Europe’s largest producer of home textiles for the main international brands that no longer have their own production. This sector essentially targets the international market, with an emphasis on bath and bed linen such as sheets, bedspreads and towels, but also the hospital, hotel and restaurant segment. The evolution focused on innovative products guarantees a prominent position in markets such as the USA, Spain, France, the UK and the Nordic countries. There are also increasingly important markets, such as Singapore, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and many others.
According to data from ANIT-Lar – National Association of Home Textile Industries, Portugal is responsible for ⅓ of European home textile exports, ranks 5th as a supplier of terry in the world, 6th in the sheets category, 10th in the table segment and 15th in the blankets category. These are, in fact, top positions that we have to be proud of as Portuguese and as entrepreneurs.
Innovation and quality, the key words in home textiles.
Despite strong competition, particularly from countries such as Turkey, India, Pakistan or Bangladesh, the truth is that this sector has reinvented itself and sought new ways of asserting itself in order to secure a top position. The value of national production is recognized as a result of the work carried out by this industry, essentially concentrated in the north of the country, to position itself at a high level of quality.
While the intrinsic quality of what is Made in Portugal is one of the main factors, the ability to create solutions that meet customers’ needs also stands out. There is a commitment to technical knowledge, combined with technology and innovation that guarantee the sector’s affirmation in the Portuguese and international economy.
The export orientation of Portuguese home textiles is based on quality, design, innovation, technology, flexibility, business orientation towards customer needs, sustainability and ecology.
In fact, sustainable and environmentally friendly textiles are a differentiating element and a real challenge for the sector. A textile product that is considered sustainable has a different production base from that of so-called conventional textile products. In this context, as a brand committed to responsible textile production, Crishome Tex already has OEKO-TEX certification valid for final products in bed linen and also for fabric by the meter. We create eco-conscious home textiles that meet our customers’ needs.
